about

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are figures which symbolize the evils to come at the end of the world. The white horse represents conquest, the red horse, war, the black horse, famine, and the pale horse, plague.

My mother would sing me an old traditional lullaby as a child “All the Pretty little Horses” to put me to sleep. I found the juxtaposition of the two songs, ironic and evocative.

Through the news media, I was witnessing all the war and strife in the Middle East, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Palestine and Israel. I met a refugee who had been blinded by shrapnel in Lebanon as a young girl. Recently there was more death and injury to people and to children when they were protesting the shifting of the American Embassy to Jerusalem.

I wrote this song to reveal how a mother will attempt to shelter her innocent child from the horrors of the world, but it is an almost impossible task.

lyrics

The Four Horsemen’s Lullaby

Lullaby, don’t you cry
Just look at all the pretty little horses

No way out.
No way in
Circle round
And back again
Ride around on this dark carousel
On the journey straight to hell

All the horses,
White, red and black
Pale by comparison to the last

In the land
Where the water
Turns to wine
Soldiers fight to redraw the lines

Rockets fire
Within their light
Children weep
Mothers hold them tight

Quiet down
Sweet little one
The pretty horses
They will come

No way out.
No way in
Circle round
And back again
Ride around on this dark carousel
On the journey straight to hell

Lullaby, don’t you cry
Just look at all the pretty little horses
